Bambi II is the 2006 midquel to the first "Bambi" film from 1942. It takes place after Bambi's mother's death and before he reaches adulthood. This movie was first titled Bambi and the Great Prince, but was changed to Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest and later Bambi II.
Synopsis[]
After the death of his mother, Bambi goes to live with his father, the Great Prince of the Forest, who is reluctant to raise him, because he was taught it's the doe's job to raise fawns. After a moment of fear in the face of extreme danger, Bambi decides that he needs to learn to be brave and to defend himself, and he asks his best friends, Thumper and Flower to help him.
Plot[]
Bambi wanders through the forest calling his mother without knowing that she was shot and killed by hunters. His father, The Great Prince of the Forest, finds him and tells him his mother can't be with him anymore, and he takes a devastated Bambi back with him to his den. Friend Owl visits, and he asks if there's anything he can do to help. The Great Prince tells Friend Owl to find a suitable doe to raise Bambi, because he was taught that raising fawns is the doe's job, but Friend Owl reminds the him that food is scarce in the Winter and that the does can barely feed themselves. The Great Prince then decides to let Bambi stay with him until Spring.
While Bambi stays with his father, he tries to learn about his duties protecting the forest from Man and other dangerous threats. He later meets up with his friends Thumper, Flower, and Thumper's sisters, and they go together to see the groundhog as he makes his prediction about the future weather. They also see their other friends, Faline and Friend Owl. The groundhog, upon not seeing his shadow, declares that Spring has begun, much to the joy of all around. The celebration of the arrival of spring is cut short when a bully deer named Ronno shows up, and scares away the groundhog yelling: "BOO!" Ronno then laughs, and he introduces himself to everyone, and tries to impress them by telling a story about an encounter with Man, where Man tried to lure him using a deer call, but he attacked Man instead. Faline finds Ronno's story unbelievable, and Bambi's reaction has Ronno think that he's being accused of lying, and Ronno tries to pick a fight with Bambi, but it is cut short by Ronno's mother calling him. Ronno gets angry at his mother for constantly interrupting him while he's trying to make new friends, and he leaves with her.
Later, as his friends disperse, Bambi is left alone to take a nap under a tree, and wait for his father to arrive and take him home. He has a dream about visiting Heaven, with a golden meadow filled with butterflies, and he hears his mother's voice calling him. He sees her standing on top of a hill, and he runs to her and they lovingly nuzzle each other. She tells Bambi that everything will be okay, and she reassures him that she will always be with him, even if he can't see her.
After Bambi wakes up, he hears her voice saying: "I'm here!" which confuses him. Thinking that he really is hearing his mother's voice coming from the meadow, and that she is still alive, he runs out to the meadow to look for her. A flock of screaming crows fly past, and as Bambi looks towards the source of the disturbance, three of Man's hunting dogs run towards him, causing him to freeze in terror.
Elsewhere, the Great Prince sees the crows and suddenly becomes worried about Bambi. He rushes to the meadow and arrives just in time to fight the hunting dogs. As they run away, the Great Prince sees the glint of a rifle and yells at the still frozen Bambi to run. After a nudge from his antlers, Bambi snaps out of it, and they escape to safety. Afterward, Bambi tells him that he heard his mother's voice, and he tells him that it was one of Man's tricks and yells at him for freezing, along with not running after he ordered him to run. Bambi apologizes, and they return home to his father's den. Bambi then asks: "She's never coming back, is she?" His father sadly lowers his head and quietly answers: "No." and he leaves to be alone to calm himself down.
The next morning, the Great Prince tells Bambi not to follow him as he performs his duties and to stay near the den. Bambi is disappointed, as he wants to be with him while he performs his duties. He reveals to Thumper and Flower that he wishes he was brave like his father. Thumper offers to teach Bambi how to be brave, advising him to "be scarier than whatever's scaring you".
Bambi, Thumper and Flower walk through the forest practicing their bravery until they come to a log guarded by the Porcupine, who terrifies them. When he realizes that the Great Prince is standing nearby, Bambi sees this situation as a good opportunity to show off his newfound bravery by confronting the Porcupine and crossing the log. Thumper runs off to get the Great Prince's attention, while Bambi confronts the Porcupine, ignoring his complaints and leaping right over him, much to the Porcupine's chagrin. He stiffens his quills and begins chasing Bambi backwards and forwards across the log. Thumper brings the Great Prince to see Bambi "being brave," but when he realizes Bambi is being chased, he leads the Great Prince away. After a short struggle, the Porcupine is propelled into the air by a piece of wood and lands quills-first on Bambi's rear. Bambi yells out in pain, causing the Great Prince to go and investigate the noise, much to Thumper's dismay. Bambi ducks down under the water, so the Great Prince doesn't see him.
Thumper returns to Bambi and begins plucking out the quills, which causes him to cry out in pain. Ronno and Faline are nearby and hear Bambi's cries, which causes Faline to run to him to check on him, much to the dismay of Ronno, who was showing off in front of her. When Ronno sees Bambi, he teases him for the meadow incident where Bambi froze in fear. Ronno then decides that he and Faline are going to leave and he begins forcing Faline to go with him against her will. Bambi yells at Ronno to leave Faline alone, and Ronno confronts him in anger and begins teasing Flower and Thumper. An angry Thumper pushes Bambi into Ronno, and he ends up in the mud. Humiliated, Ronno chases after Bambi and Thumper. During the chase, Bambi jumps over a large chasm, putting distance between him and Ronno and ending the chase. The Great Prince appears, and scolds Bambi for not staying near the den, but he stops himself when he notices the large chasm, and he asks Bambi if he jumped, and Bambi admits it. The Great Prince comments that he didn't make a jump like that until he had antlers. Bambi is happy, and the Great Prince answers that they should be going home. After watching them leave, Ronno tries to jump, but he slips and falls into the mud.
The next day, Bambi, realizing that his jumping skills made his father proud, continues to practice his jumping skills with Thumper's help. The Great Prince is pleased to see his son practicing his jumping skills. Friend Owl asks the Great Prince if his feelings started changing, but he denies it. Bambi becomes confused by the stiffness of the Great Prince's behavior, and Thumper suggests that Bambi go and talk to him, and he learns about observing, which the Great Prince describes as looking, listening, and smelling for danger all at the same time. The Great Prince then teaches Bambi how to "feel the forest," and Bambi hears and sees other deer running, along with Ronno stopping and giving Bambi a haughty look before leaving. Bambi and Great Prince join in running with the other deer, and Ronno is awed seeing the Great Prince running, and he becomes jealous seeing Bambi running next to him and tries to outrun him. With the Great Prince's encouragement, Bambi outruns Ronno and catches up to the Great Prince, and they laugh together while running. They also start playing games together, along with the Great Prince testing Bambi's capabilities.
The next morning, while Bambi and the Great Prince are playing together, Friend Owl arrives to introduce them to Mena, a doe who was friends with Bambi's mother. After Bambi learns that his father is sending him away, he yells that he wished him mother was there instead of him, and he runs off to tell his friends. The Great Prince tells Friend Owl: "This is my fault. Bambi needs a mother. A prince should NOT be raising a child!"
Bambi eventually leaves with Mena, but as they go to Mena's home, Ronno appears and taunts Bambi about his father sending him away, because he's ashamed of him. An enraged Bambi charges at Ronno and they fight. Mena tries to stop the fight, but Ronno charges into Bambi, causing Bambi to knock Mena into one of Man's snare traps, which immediately alerts them and their hunting dogs of her location. As the dogs rush towards the three, Ronno flees in terror, screaming: "Mommy!" Bambi freezes again, but he quickly snaps out of it after Mena repeats his mother's last words before her death. Determined not to let history repeat itself, Bambi distracts the four dogs away from Mena, causing them to chase him.
The Great Prince arrives and frees Mena from the snare trap before going after Bambi, who manages to lose some of the dogs, one with the help of Flower spraying him, and another with help from the Porcupine, and begins to climb a mountain. One of the dogs slips and falls, leaving only one dog still chasing after Bambi. He climbs to a high ledge and dislodges some rocks, which do nothing. As the dog closes in, Bambi angrily kicks him in the chest, and he's knocked off the mountain. The Great Prince sees it and is relieved, but after Bambi jumps to another ledge, it begins to crumble, Bambi falls. At first, everyone thinks he's dead, and the Great Prince sheds a single tear. Bambi then regains consciousness, and for the first time, he asks: "Dad?" The Great Prince answers: "I'm here! I'm here!" and they nuzzle each other. Everyone else is relieved, and Mena leaves, deciding that she's no longer needed.
Sometime later, Thumper tells the other forest animals an exaggerated tale about how Bambi defeated Man's hunting dogs. He is then interrupted by a teenage Bambi, now sporting a pair of sprouting antlers and without his spots. While with his friends, the Porcupine stabs Bambi with his quills, and he accidentally kisses Faline. Ronno then returns, telling Bambi they'll meet again, only to slip and fall in the water and screaming: "Mommy!" after being bitten on the nose by a turtle. Bambi then leaves his friends to go be with the Great Prince, who takes him to the forest glade where he first met his mother. Bambi asks him what he was like at his age, and he answers that he was a lot like him, much to the delight of his son.

Behind the Scenes[]
- The three fawns' age is revealed. Bambi is older than Faline but younger than Ronno. The evidence is at the beginning of the film, neither Faline nor Bambi had antlers and both had spots while Ronno had no spots and budding antlers. In the end, Bambi is the second fawn to lose his spots and got his antlers, while Faline kept her spots until her adulthood.
- Patrick Stewart is the only actor in Bambi II who was alive when the original Bambi was released. The other actors had not been born yet.
